Category: Hair Salons [Edit]
Neighborhood: Union SquareThis is THE BEST salon in San Francisco. And this is coming from someone who thinks it's harder to find a good stylist/colorist than it is a doctor :-)
I've gone to many different salons in SF; Festoon, Joseph Cozza, Maiden Lane etc., and they all did great work, but nothing even close to the perfection that was my recent experience at Di Pietro Todd.
I highly recommend going here. You will be thankful.
PS They sell Kerastase products

I had haircut with Renee.
The hair wash and head massage by her assistant was great, her hair cut was excellent, the blow drying could have been better!
I am giving 4 star because she was not really focused on me, especially when I was talking to her (about what I wanted) and she suddenly talked to one of her client, or in the middle of my hair cut going and supervising other customers. If it wasn't a high-end salon I wouldn't have minded, but certainly I don't expect this type of behavior from Dipietro Todd Salon.
Nevertheless, my hair cut was as I wanted with many long layers and I may come back.

Ok, so I've spent far too much money on my car as of late and couldn't justify spending $300 on my hair despite my hair's desperate cries for help. So I decided to take a risk and try the 'Model' cut and color. I arrived on time (10 minutes early) and sat on the couch where I was approached by a grad student who charges $35 for a cut instead of the normal $15, but she seemed to know her stuff so I made an appointment. with her.
Then I sat around for about 40 minutes while the students were getting out of their meeting and had flashbacks of my childhood days of taking my pigs to the county fair. I was poked, prodded, and judged on hair texture, root length, and overall appearance. I wished I had a sign that said, "I need highlights." I finally found a student who was looking to do highlights and we went off to a chair where she felt my hair and we talked about how I wanted highlights. I made an appointment with her and was out of there in about an hour.
So to become a model, be ready to spend an hour saying the same thing over and over again. Eventually you will find someone who is looking for what you have. The students each have a specific focus for that week (bob cut, highlights, red hair, curly, straight, long layers, bangs, etc.) so just remember it's not you, it's them.
The actual cuts took place at the Filmore location so I'll yelp those later but this review was just about the experience of how to become a model.

Akemi is the patron saint of hairstylists. Her praises should be sung from rooftops.
I'm extra choosy, to the point of being ridiculous, when it comes to finding a hairstylist and stuck with my last one for about 10 years, yes - she was doing my hair since 8th grade. While I have no complaints with my old hairstylist, the commute was getting to be too much for me since I moved to the city in the latter years.
After performing extensive Yelp research I was between Akemi and Jay at diPietro Todd.
My first appointment with Akemi went down like this; she first consulted with me and played with my hair for about 20 minutes, asking everything possible. Her strategy was to give me the easiest reproducible shape and texture for my type of hair, after troubleshooting my cowlick and lack of volume.
I completely got along with her, both personality and creativity wise so I immediately trusted her hands. It was little like love at first sight, only if my hair could see.
I have since been back to diPietro Todd twice and absolutely love how Akemi has transformed my head, not once, but both times.
Yes, you will have to wait at least a month to see her, but she is totally worth the wait and has a seriously amazing eye for detail and individuality.
I can do so many different style with my hair now, she has made it more manageable and beautiful than I really ever thought possible.
The salon itself is bigger and noisy, but I like that, you can people watch. They immediately hook you up with refreshments and reading material when you arrive and the service is really friendly.
AC, Akemi's assistant gives the most amazing head massages during the shampoo and always makes me feel like I'm ready to crawl up and pass out.
I literally have no complaints about Akemi at diPietro Todd, she is amazing and the most creative hairstylist I have ever gone to. I'm not leaving her unless she leaves, so get in line bitches.
This review is in response to the hair modeling.
Alright, I went to this place very hopeful and excited. I wanted color, not something drastic, just something to give my hair a little change. A friend and I went. Immediately I got picked because I had non-color treated long brown hair and I could tell the chick thought I would be an easy person to work with. My friend however wasn't picked because they said her hair was too damaged to work with. All she wanted was a trim and they seemed to have a problem with that...Oh well we let it slide. Hours and hours later I was still in the chair getting a cool boliage (sp?) treatment. Basically hand painted highlights. When she was finally done I really couldn't see much of a difference, other than the fact I got a good blow dry. And it took almost 4 hours. Still happy that I only spent 30 dollars on a normally 250 dollar treatment, I went home and was fine with it. Eventually the glaze she put on top faded and the highlights looked really good.
Next I went for a haircut, and this is where this went from a 4 star review to a 3. Home girl WRECKED my hair. First of all she told me my long hair looked mousy and unkempt and I would look thinner if I cut it shorter. I knew it was a lie, but I went along with it, telling her I didn't want it over my shoulders. I also told her I liked to wear it curly and she said she would cut it so I could wear it both ways. Hours later my hair was shorter than I wanted, but I figured it was summer and it looked cute so I went with it. Also she had blown it curly so I figured straightening it would make it longer.
A wholr bunch of girls from my floor in my dorm went with me that day to get our hair done, and all but me and another girl were unhappy walking out. One of the girls looked like a peacock meets janis joplin. Huge bangs, fan sticking up in the back, awkward layers. I felt bad for her.
The next day while washing my hair I realized that the stylist had basically turned my hair into a bowl cut bob combination. Uneven layers, missing chunks in the back...I looked like my kid cousin had gone at me with scissors rather than a trained stylist (she was a real stylist, not a student). I called the salon to try and get in touch with the stylist...Hell, I was willing to pay her to fix it at that point, but she never got back to me.
Just be careful in there...best advice.
No, I did NOT commit stylist adultery.... but I have now been officially tempted by the fruit of another; that other woman being diPietro Todd.
Fellow Yelper Amanda V. (http://www.yelp.com/us...) approached me at a DYL and said she liked my "head shape".
Wait, hold the fucking phone. Did I just get HIT ON? Is there a full moon out? My horoscope said *nothing* about potential romant---- huh? Oh, you mean you want to cut my hair? OF COURSE YOU DO. HOW COULD ANYBODY POSSIBLY THINK THAT I'D BE ATTRACTED TO WOMEN AND THEREFORE FAVORABLE TO ATTENTION FROM THE OPPOSITE SEX?!? *sigh* Well, if we're not talking digits then we might as well be talking hair. MY HAIR.
I made my way to 177 Post St. early this Monday morning to play "hair model" for Amanda and lay down a meager $15 for, seriously, an unbelievably sexy hair cut in one of the most well-organized and professional salons I've been in.
DPT is well-oiled machine of a salon, with a ridiculous amount of stations for cutting, coloring, washing; it was completely full when I went in due to the training going on, but from what I hear this place is always a hum of activity due to its popularity. While Amanda was cutting my hair and receiving input from their artistic guru, Akemi, *I* ended up learning a ton about different cutting techniques which made me walk away feeling incredibly well-informed about my hair (baby duck hair. *quack!*) and the way it ought to be approached when getting it cut. Information I will definitely take back to my current stylist as I did find the cut I received at DPT to be more to my liking.
Amanda V. is a true artist with the blades and I feel privileged to have had my hair styled by her. I'm having serious thoughts about sitting my current stylist down and having "the talk". I think at this juncture, we need to keep all options on the table, including an open relationship.
And I would definitely recommend being a hair model if you get the chance. To get my hair teased and played with by beautiful women for nearly two hours? BEST WAY TO START THE WORK WEEK EVER.

I've been coming here for years mostly as part of the student program where the aspiring stylists learn how to become full fledged stylists. I've had color done as well as cuts and always like coming here.
Since so many of the folks that have cut my hair have graduated I do stop by for a non-student hair cut from time to time and the full treatment is always pretty plush.
OK I'm feeling a bit too metro now... end of review... :)

Great experience. I have been to the Palo Alto salon and this one is just as good. Amita Moticka is the best. You can find her named as one of the best stylist in the country in the Allure magazine (June 2008). The experience is wonderful from the scalp massage to the complimentary tea/coffee/water. Everyone is very nice and attentive. Parking is easy at the Sutter garage.
The salon is very professional and the people are welcoming and well organized.
Fiona cut my hair. She lacks any sort of soft skills that made me initially doubt or want to trust her with cutting my hair. When I go to a hair salon, I expect a great stylist to tell me what would work for me based on my type of hair and face shape. I also think that stylists should have creative ideas, especially if the customer is willing to try something new. She expected me to tell her exactly what I wanted. I told her I wanted to take three inches off and have a style that was different than what I currently had. That wasn't good enough and so that led to the whole cutting process being awkward. She was not an easy person to talk to and, more importantly, feel comfortable with. She was also rough with my head when cutting. I also didn't appreciate the fact that she just left cut hairs on my face and didn't clean them off. And the fact that she insulted me. (I'm sorry that I'm not an expert on hair. I thought that was her job.) Also, the style that she gave me was pretty much the same as my original style. When I came back home, my friends said there was hardly any change in my style. However, despite my experience, I feel that Fiona has the ability to cut hair well. But I would not want to go back to her again. But I would go back to the salon.

Love Kim Todd! She was the one who hired me back n the day when I was a low on the people pole hair assistant. It was a very tough training some teachers were harder to please than others. It was a rough behind the scenes environment for a young innocent hippy girl born in NYC and raised here in SF. I was not really prepared for all the behind the scenes chatter that goes with the territory. The hair world is really the hair world where fringe rules the game. Kim and Andrew are really great bosses and I would totally recommend there training program to anyone seeking to go all the way.
For me it was more practical to take my skills on the road , runway, photos, TV, and movies. I am considered a session stylist because I am hired for on set head to toe styling. I learned a lot here, have received many wonderful hair cuts here in the past. I loved my senior stylists and thank them to this day for all their knowledge. Thanks Kim and Andrew!

The best haircuts I've ever had were all at diPietro Todd. Impeccable salon with talented stylists as well as an atmosphere that makes you just want to stay all day.
Conveniently located downtown, the diPietro Todd Salon resembles a loft--spacious, industrial, clean. But it's got so much life--the stylists have so much personality, there is always great music, and there is even a flat screen TV in the shampoo/conditioner area playing runway shows.
I really love how chic I feel at the salon, but the way I feel walking out is priceless. By far my favorite salon in SF.
I am a frequent patron of the DiPietro Todd salon school near Union Square. YES, it can take 3 hours to get a haircut, and YES some of the teachers have a bit of an attitude, but the students are great, closely supervised, and I've always been happy with the results. Plus it only costs $15 to be a "hair model." [Hair Model?! When have I ever been called a "model"? Woo hoo!] Seriously though, people often ask me "Where do you get your hair cut?!?" and I am happy to recommend this place.
Based on recent experience, I can particularly recommend Acy for cuts and Caroline for color. Nice work, ladies!

Troy is amazing at color. Simply the best. Super nice, does an excellent job and you'll be very, very happy.
When I first moved in to the city, I was dreading my first hair cut. It's always difficult to find the right hair person and I felt a little scared to be honest. I booked an appointment here after seeing a good review in a magazine (vogue or elle?) and was counting down the days. Coincidentally my sister (then a long time SF resident who still was looking a good salon) made an appointment. She came back looking fabulous and I was excited to find out I had the same hair dresser. Debbie Allie knows her stuff! I went in and she gave me a perfect hair cut. The cut was a little high maintenance but I loved it. The colorist Jenn also works her magic. I highly recommend this place.
I have been getting my hair cut here for 5 years, and it is the only place i will go.
Jason 'J' has the more talent of all the hair dressers in the city. Plus he is so fun to be around. I look forward to my time at the saloon, I always leave feeling gorgeous, fresh and alive. And leave laughing about the wonderful conversation we have.

Renee and Jason!!!!!
I have curly hair and have spent so many days crying of bad haircuts in my life. This all changed when I met Renee. I have been seeing her since 2004. She did my hair for my wedding. She is a master of her craft, and funny as hell. I LOVE my hair for the first time in my life, thanks to Renee.
And then there is Jason. I have gone from red to blonde and every step of the way it looked great. He is funny and smart and so so good at making me look pretty. These experts get it. I get the hair that I want, even if I can't articulate exactly what that is.
Expensive? Yes. But it's your hair! Save money on groceries. I'd wash dishes to keep my locks in these four capable hands.
Debra Fallon is a terrific hair stylist
she is one of the most talented around. I have been told that I'm picky about my hair, she cut my hair for the first time and I love it
thank you Debra so much,
I will be back
My Grampa Don used to say "Zowie" whenever a cute chick entered or left a room. For particular emphasis he'd make a double six-gun with his index fingers and/or do some schticky cartoon wolf thing with his wide set peepers. I'm about five minutes slicker then my beloved Grampa Don so I kept my Zowies holstered (if not loaded) while in diPietro Todd, but suffice to say he'd have shot the place full of corn with all the united colors of pretty up in there. Also, woof.
Anyhow, I'm reviewing the stylage of one singular Amy at dPT's, not my late and much-missed Grampa's lax, though never retiring, game. I felt at ease in her chair directly as I could see on her work station a rear head shot of some classy silver fox of a dude, his hair a sweeping Big Wednesday of gray on top. To myself I thought it looked like the back of the great man David Lynch's own rock solid barnet. Turns out, halfway through the cut I'm yapping about Wong Kar-Wei or somesuch snobby film director and she reveals the photo to be un serie de trois headshots of Dave Lynch none other! Hair thick as a brick redundancy. To myself again I think, "Stop making me love you Amy. It's showy and you had me at hot girl with tattooed six-guns". (Beat it Grampa Don!)
Since I was getting the test-head discount rate, the uber-qualified Amy was supervised by an instructor, Dawn. Dawn wore smooth glasses, her hair in a cool 60s...um, I would probably say "bob" but I quickly learned that diPietro Todd is like the NASA of hairstylist geeks. So her hairstyle probably had a way more complicated name and I'm a buck-toothed hick for even having "bob" as my go-to. They've got a different word for every shade of beige and trying to grok it all is like explaining Linux to Early Man.
In re-conning my mass of cowlicks and stubborn, willful waves it was decided they'd give me an I Dunno. There was a word for it and I heard it twice but I think it might've been Dutch. Possibly Catalan. Anyhow Dawn said it was "a little bit Rockabilly" which again put me at ease. To myself I thought "Not run y'alls 'fangers' through my icky, grimy, buttered up locks-Rockabilly", but rather just a classic dab of Rockabilly. Nice.
Anyhow, I'd had these crash-test haircuts before at Sassoon where the earnest skater kid stylist from Japan who had his own fair skillset was continually hectored in front of my dome, most disrespectfully. The kind of "don't wash the dishes unless dirty" or "cook the pizza just until it's done" nano-management advice. Then two hours later I walk out with a somber mind and a perfect do wondering, what was that cow up in my boy Ken's grill about. But Dawn was supportive and constructive. The moment where she said "But you went back to your guide and that's HUGE" to Amy, all atta-boy, I got a little but misty. Pure positives.
And my barnet was swaggering! More positives. There've been many lovely compliments, and all about me, which is how I like them. Back in the 80s when we too-much, too-youngsters called hooking up "scamming", the term for my fly new do would've been "scammable". I shit you not.
But I digest. Most versatile cut I've had in forever. At Attention, In Repose, Blue State pinko bed-head or Have You Heard The Good News missionary neat-freak, it all looks great. Scammable even. The do was superb, my mood was upbeat. As posh a place as I was in, yet still I was comfortable, un-cranky and fawned over. Now THAT'S huge. So I'll be back Amy. Possibly in 5 weeks, 4 days, 11 hours. Much love and thanks for getting my wig on.

Need a hot haircut and want good eye candy while you get your haircut?
Ask for Adam. He does wonders with long, full hair.
Don't be late bc you will get yelled at! In fact, arrive 15 minutes early and enjoy a nice cup of tea or coffee.
Minus one star for how expensive it is.
A student gave me his diPietro card, not mentioning that he was a student. When I called him later to make an appt, he again did not mention he was a student. I discovered he was a student only when I arrived -- when I was required to pay the $15 "model fee." I've never had to pay before getting my hair cut before -- and now I know why:
Three hours I sat in that chair. Three hours. For a basic, one-length cut that I've been getting for years and has never taken anyone more than an hour. Guess I should be glad it wasn't his final exam -- I'd still be there.
And throughout the three hours, the student and instructor kept up a constant complaint about how my hair was too thick. At least the complaints weren't racist, as Joanne G was subjected to!
Finally, I walked out with the cut the student's instructor decided I was going to get, not the cut the student had recommended when he gave me his card and then again when I arrived -- the cut that I wanted. The cut I've had many times before, successfully, at different salons. Argh, I should have gotten up and walked out and let them keep the $15. I'd gladly pay $100 to get the cut I want -- and in an hour!

I have been seeing hair stylist Fionna for almost a year now and I absolutely love her.
It was so hard for me to find a great hair stylist. Every time I went to the salon I would always explain to the stylist what I wanted, but they were never able to style my hair the way I had explained. It was real frustrating. This last hair stylist I had before Fionna was the worst. I have short curly hair which I will admit is a little tougher to cut than someone with straight, long hair, but she should have never attempted if she didn't feel comfortable. My hair would come out looking so miserable that I would cry. I would look like a boy every time she cut my hair, the only reason I kept going back to her was because she was my daughters friend. Then I heard about Fionna from a friend of mine at work, after that I have never hated any hair cut. She knows exactly what she is doing, has a great eye for style. She has experience cutting many different styles of hair which is perfect. I always leave the salon with a big smile on my face :)

The Monday Academy (continuing education program) rules! As much as I would love to get my hair colored and cut on a regular basis, it's just way too expensive. I opt for color-in-a-box and get half-assed results.
One day I decided I didn't want calico hair and searched Craigslist using the word "free." A few salons came up, and one (DPT) happened to need models with medium length hair, red/brown with some roots. That was me!! I called Brandi and she booked me for the next Monday. Brandi was wonderful. Sweet and talented. My hair is beautiful. People actually stop me and comment on the color which is now rich and uniform.
I went back two weeks later and got a cut by Jesse. He gave me a very chic, sleek bob which showcases the rich, rich red. People comment on it as well.
Even the student who did my blow dry rocked. Her name is Lena.
I plan to never, ever, dye my own hair again! The price of their model fee is just slightly more than a high end color-in-a-box. And the haircut fee can't be beat. I highly recommend DPT's Academy.
I love this place! I'm not the kind of guy who gets my hair cut very regularly and I am not that great at styling it in the morning but despite that my hair always looks good and it always grows out well thanks to the skill and talent of the staff and students at the Post Street salon. I have had my hair cut and colored by students as well as regular stylists and I have never had anything but a positive experience. Given my "drothers" I'd always choose Amita. She is a natural genius and worth every penny.
I have been seeing Heather for color for almost 2 years now and she is amazing! I used to see her at Dekko (but still go there for my cuts with Jules) out near the dogpatch, but have followed her downtown. I am one of those few San Franciscans who hates to shop and loathes going to Union Square.
She is fantastic! Book now!
This review is for Akemi. My friend introduced me to her a little over a year ago and since then, I haven't let anyone else cut my hair (thanks, Jesse). There have been times where I was in dire need of some styling and taming for my bangs and layers [6 months sans grooming], but I honestly couldn't get myself to let anyone else touch my hair. Nonetheless, Akemi knows I'm low maintenance and gave me a hair cut that still grew out beautifully without ever having to style my hair.
Akemi definitely has great technique, and is worth the drive from Sacramento. In addition, the ambiance of the salon is great. Nothing pretentious, but still very nice.
You may have to book her in advance.
I've been keeping my hair style short, a #2 buzz-cut, for years. It's quick, maintenance free, and can usually be had for little money at any "salon" in the Bay area regardless of neighborhood. "Number 2" doesn't require a picture (or translator) and is never a stressful surprise when the chair spins around. Well, that being said, I grew tired of the look. I started thinking about growing out my curls, in hopes of looking like a D&G model. I made an appt with Stacy at the DPT salon, took a pic of the ad that was my idea/inspiration, and worried about how I would eat after paying $100 for the visit. Upon meeting Stacy, I knew that I had made the right decision. She was absolutely lovely, even at the crack of dawn. Honest, bright, and completely genuine, she could charge triple for the service that she offers, and it would still be fair.
As for my hair, I'm not sure if I can hold out much longer...Is a #2 at DPT available for a discounted rate?
So, this place is great. If you have no money and are willing to experiment with your hair, you can be a hair model. You have to go at 8am on Monday mornings and wait to see if you get picked to model hair. I did that and I fell inlove with Adam. He cut my hair and did such an amazing job. He has been the best person to ever cut my hair. Also, everyone working there is extremely nice. I loved this place.

I've been going to Di Pietro Todd as a model since the spring of 2004. I've had various stylists and colorists, and I have to say that I've never been disappointed...
Ever.
Each time I go for a cut, the students are respectful of my wishes, and if a given student isn't on the section appropriate for my hair, I'm passed on to someone who is.
Regarding the quality of colorists, Angel has been amazing and we've worked together for almost two years. He's incredibly friendly, and nearing the end of his training...He's always given me professional results.
It doesn't matter if I want my hair blond and beachy, or platinum all over, he suggests new things, and I trust him implicitly. Foils or balayage, Angel knows his profession inside and out.
I highly recommend him.
i've been debating on writing this review, because i didn't want to add to jay's already limited availability. then i read one review that slammed jay, and i simply can't let that fly. jay has been cutting my hair for over five years, and i could not be happier with him. i would wait to come home from college in indiana to get my hair cut by jay. i live in los angeles and i still schedule my trips north around jay. the man is brilliant. all of his hair cuts last for a very long time, which makes it ok to wait 4 even 6 months between visits. the claim that he doesn't know how to cut curly hair is preposterous. through jay i have learned to love my curly hair and i rarely straighten it., but this is on possible because of his brilliant hair cuts.
i used to have my hair colored by claire but she has since moved to australia. this makes me very sad. alas, i am forced to go back to doing my own hair color. worse things have happened and my pocket will now be a wee bit fatter.
the moral of the story is that a haircut at di pietro todd is worth every cent, and trust me, you will be paying many cents. however, if you are as protective of your hairs i am, it all comes out in the wash. i love you, jay! see you in two weeks.

She is as cool and stylish as it gets. We both drive from Sacramento to San Francisco to specially see her. She gets my style and knows what looks good. Period. I've had my share of bad cuts, but never once with her. Because she is in such high demand, I suggest you book months ahead of time.

Until I found Amita, I have to confess....I cut my own hair!
I just couldn't stand to pay several hundred dollars and then come home and 'repair' it.
Thank you for saving me from my self, my cheep bad scissors and the reality that I don't have eyes in the back of my head....
I'm hooked on you forever. You have tamed my curls and always find new ways to keep me excited.
Heather is amazing...my girl of 10 years from another salon moved and I have not been able to find anyone that does my highlights as well as she did...until now. Heather is attentive, kind, warm, made me feel so comfortable and most importantly she listened. It is SO EXPENSIVE but I def. feel like I received the royal treatment. The only reason why I'm not giving it 5 stars is because of the expense.
I have two amazing men in my hair life:
Adam (cut) and Jason (color).
I cannot give any higher praise for the work they do. Both are incredibly attentive, creative, detailed and passionate about their work; They turn a hair cut and color into a personalized experience of art.
I started going to DiPietro Todd after I moved into the city almost two years ago. I came in with self imposed shorn locks, a bit edgy, but chopped. Everyone looked at my hair and said you need to see Adam. He is creative. He will know what you want. Well he did, and has gone beyond knowing what I want, to giving amazing suggestions and perfect results everytime. I cannot walk around on the street without getting praise for my cut and color. "So unique, so feminine, so creative, beautiful color."
I was then introduced to Jason, who took said amazing cut, and gave me the most incredible red hair. Beautifully dimensional luminous, and perfect - Not an "out of the bottle color" tacky and bright... but an understated, beautiful red.
I would never consider going to anyone else. Period. Their work and treatment are impeccable.
Love DiPietro Todd, Adam and Jason.
The salon:
Di Pietro Todd salon probably had a heyday sometime in the past when it was really hip and cool and the newest thing. Now its like a smoothly running engine and I like that. I've gone to "hip" salons with all kinds of cool art on the walls and all the stylists are super trendy and having some interesting life crisis and are full of crazy stories.
However, I became weary of these places. For one thing, when I would finally find a stylist I liked, I'd end up having to follow them and their ADD from salon to salon, or worse, they'd move back to Florida or wherever and I'd be stuck. Not to mention the crummy customer service at most of these places where some super-made-up hot-looking 20 year old receptionist munched on a sandwich and made plans for later that night as she swiped my credit card and pushed over the receipt, no pen, for me to sign. Sigh.
Di Pietro Todd is not untrendy, its just kind of settled into the plain high ceiling minimalist look which is fine with me. Its an open airy space and I like it. Everyone who works there is super professional and if you look like you need something, anyone who is walking by will ask if you need help, whether it is an assistant or some else's stylist. All the employees of course are very cute and stylish as is typical in a nice salon - they are just professional as well. Its a really nice experience for a customer.
Jenn, colorist:
Jenn has been coloring my hair for about 4 years now and I am completely satisfied. The color lasts and lasts, and looks good. She is fast and accurate. I'm not the kind of person who wants to be in a salon all day. She will talk if you feel talky, or just work if you don't feel chatty. This is a relief to me as I definitely have both moods and appreciate having the option.
Dawn: Hair cut
I think you have to find someone who really gets your hair type. I have wavy potentially frizzy hair that is a little on the thick side. I've often ended up with the dreaded hair pyramid when people just don't know how to handle it. My last hairdresser before Dawn tried to handle my hair by giving me two different lengths, short on the inside, long on the outside, so that it literally looked like I was wearing a long wig over a short bob. Argh!
Dawn studies my hair like she is going to write a thesis on it. She snips and measures and at the end, my hair looks great. No more pyramid. I am so so happy and get so many compliments. If you have thick hair, and don't want to fuss with it, I heartily recommend Dawn. I don't have to do anything after I wash it but put in some product and leave it alone.

I have long hair...really long, to my butt crack long and I had been thinking about chopping it all off. I hadn't had my hair cut or trimmed in about a year and the last place I went left me dissatisfied.
I was yelping for the perfect salon and the perfect stylist after I had decided to chop all my hair off to donate it and I cam up with zip. I was then referred by a trustworthy friend to go see JOCELYN at DPT. It turned out to be the best thing for my hair.
The salon was great. It is located downtown and when I arrived I was greeted immediately. I was served green tea and my hair washed with yummy smelling kerastase. When I met with JOCELYN I didn't have to explain much of what I wanted, she totally understood what I was saying right away. My hair turned out great. I was left with two 14 inch braids to donate and a great stylist that I can't wait to go back to. If you are in search of a new stylist try JOCELYN from DPT. You can all thank me later. ;)

Mmmmmmmm FERNANDO.
"There was something in my hair that night
The stars were bright, Fernando....
It was shining there for you and me
For all your hipster friends to see, Fernando
Though I always wanted to go loose
There's no regret -
If I had to do the same upDO again
I would, my friend, Fernando..."
Thank you for making my hair look so good the other day! That was fun, wasn't it?
Let's do it again soon.

I just took one of the higher education classes, Free Form, offered Nov.11/07. Went in thinking it was just going to be another dollar driven, product knowledge class. I WAS WRONG, this salon offers a well detailed program. I have been to academies in NYC, LA, and now SF, and I feel this academy was great and will grow very fast. Thank you guys very much for the challenge and knowledge. Troy P. and Jen H. were the instructors. They are confident in their craft, and are determined to help create better colorists. Thank You Very Much! The whole staff was Awesome - professional, courteous and always helpful. Also, Kim Todd, one of the founders, dropped in and was very impressive. Being from Diesel Salon, San Diego, it was wonderful to get a fresh perspective from some polished San Francisco colorists.
I recently got married and a friend had referred me to Jason Moran at diPietro Todd. I was pretty relunctant because it was right before my wedding, and I have red hair and I've never let anyone color my hair. My friend said he was amazing and I thought I would give him a try. I can't tell you how many compliments I received for my hair at the wedding! He was patient and listened to all my concerns and completely made me feel at ease. I highly recommend Jason...getting married or not!
