I had the ribs with potato salad and beans. The ribs and potato salad were good. The beans were whatever. The BBQ is Excellent, very smokey and tender. I asked for spicy sauce and boy was it very hot to me this day and I'm mexican! I love peach cobbler and would've loved to try it but the were sold out when I went. I highly recomend the ribs and bbq sauce here; buy a bottle for your next bbq, support local business like this one.

What's the best part about driving around aimlessly when you're hungry? Finding some top-notch food when you least expect it. Ah yes, it's little (or big) suprises like that, that really add to the joy of dining out. Oh boy, and when it's a great BBQ joint that you bump into, wow... even better! Everett & Jones BBQ in Hayward is a great example of an unexpected dining out suprise.

As you may well know, I love me some BBQ, pork ribs being my favorite outta them all. Over at Everett & Jones, they really deliver when it comes to the pork ribs. The meat is tender and falls right off the bone and the smokey flavor is right in there. You really couldn't ask for more, but then they go and add their special recipe sauce (you can choose from medium, mild, or hot) and oh boy... it's just rib perfection from there.

It's so good that I am definitely gonna go back there again for some good eats (when i'm in the area). The only complaint I really have is cornbread. Ah man, cornbread, for me, is just so integral to BBQ. It just makes things oh so perfect. The BBQ at Everett Jones would go AWESOME with a nice cornbread muffin... oh well, it's the only complaint that I can lodge. Besides that, the food here is phenomenal. Do NOT let the area scare you away, or else you'll be missing out on some great food. Go! Go there now!

You feel like BBQ.  You like ribs.  You found a winner!
I know there's a lot of personal preference when it comes to BBQ, but E&J generally hits of spot.  We like the ribs (tender) and chicken (moist) in particular.  (The sliced beef is so-so)  "Spicy" is not mouth-burning.
It may be "traditional" to give two slices of bread and some beans with it, but they don't add much overall to the meal.
I suppose it's doesn't bring confidence and comfort to the ambiance when the guys work behind a plastic window, but they are always friendly.  I usually get take out; at this location you wouldn't want to bring the family for a sit-down dinner (go to the JLS Oakland location for that).

E&J you were pretty good if ghetto...
I didn't have a great experience on my visit but it wasn't your fault.

I really don't know any other underground BBQ places in the east bay.

This place is awesome.  Great blues on Friday nights with the Birdleg band with notables like Steve Freund backing him up.  Birdleg puts on a great show.

Party starts around 9PM, and bring an appetite.  Food's great too.

Just park in the Jack London Square lot at the end of Broadway.  It's a short walk.

Best BBQ in the Bay.  I can't get enough of the spicy BBQ.  Most places have decent baby back ribs but not beef.  Everett & Jones has the best pork & beef ribs.

I am a barbecue addict.  While I can't get anything crazy around here E&J does the job for me in the meantime.  I love everything about this hole-in-the-wall, this one is a real gem.  It doesn't have the greatest interior, but that's not the point.  Their barbecue is great, and I can never get enough of it.  Love their beans, potato salad and all their sides.

If they screw up an order they'll make it up to you.  One time I ordered a large portion of ribs, but when I got home I found out it was a small portion.  Frustrated I called them right before closing time, and they told me to come back the next day and they'll give me 3 pieces of ribs.

I am particularly cautious about voicing a complaint/criticism to any restaurant, because you never know what they'll do to your food (spit, et cetera).

I wasn't worried about these guys.  The next day I went back expecting a little plate of ribs, but instead they gave me a container loaded with ribs!  Amazing!  That's great customer service in my opinion, and I now go back without hesitation.

I am a complete sucker for their Red Velvet cake.  It's expensive, overpriced in my opinion; but I could care less.  It's so delicious.  I'd go here every day, but I'd have a heart attack if I did.

I want to see past 30... or maybe I don't.=)

We ordered 2 lunch meals of ribs for a mini July 4th celebration for me and the bf and brought that over to the local shoreline park...haha hey what's wrong with that?

We ordered a small and a regular lunch order. Each came with about 2 sides. Total came to $19. Pretty pricey, but BBQ is always pricey. The medium sauce was good. Not too spicy, but gave enough kick to last for a while until I had some ice cream after. The meat was pretty tender as well.

However, I bought the medium sauce at the local grocery and added that to some freshly cooked ribs also from the grocery. The ribs were just as tasty. In fact, the meat had less fat and more meat than the ones at Everett.

Best BBQ in Bay Area, bar none.

The space is very small and unattractive, but never underestimate the quality of the food there. The meat is really tender and with the best BBQ sauce that marinades perfectly into the meat, you'll fall in love instantly.

Don't expect the best customer service from this location (Oakland store serves better), and long wait. However it tastes better than Oakland one.

Everett and jones bbq is a great place to go get some bbq. The meat is real tender and good. Not fall off the bone but the sauce is what really makes it great. Taste like flints old sauce but thats just me. Pretty pricey but thats what you have to pay for real good bbq. Im glad its some black people making it because thats what makes it taste better. The bbq pitt looks real ol skool in the back, i think that gives it the extra flavor. Overall this place is a good bbq joint, just dont eat
there.

Get a 4 way Ribs Links Chicken and Sliced Beef that will get you took.
Another plus is that they are open until midnight.

E&J bbq 4 Stars for great tasting BBQ

I'm heading to San Mateo to meet my friend who is shooting a film.  "Hey, can you pick M. up at the train station on the way here? The Hayward station is on your way."  "No problem."

I get there early, I'm starving, and I have to pee like the proverbial race horse.  So I go back to and head down A street looking for a place.  Nothing interested me. I turn around at Mission and am heading back West when I see E&J's.  "I've heard of this place." I says to myself.

The place is a hole in the wall in a rough part of town.  You order though the little sound port in the .5 inch thick glass and pay through a slot like the night slot at the local gas stations.  All 5 guys behind the glass must have been at least 6'3" / 250, so I don't know who would give them trouble.

Got ribs and brisket to go.  Fixed it all up for me and I took it to my car to eat at the train station while waiting.  HUGE mistake.  I should have known this going in.  I should have sat at one of the 3 small tables in there at ate quickly.  Dumb, dumb, dumb.

But oh so good.

Everything was very good.  Cooked properly, very flavorful, and of course quite messy.  Had to use my bottle of water to help clean up before the train came.

Now before one of you guys from Texas starts chirpin' about how a boy from CA don't know no barbecue,  Just keep your trap shut.  I have had the "best" as defined by the locals in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Jackson MS, Starkville MS, San Antonio, and about 5 other places in the south as well as just about every other area I have been (Oregon, New Orleans, etc.).  And while my all time favorite is a place in Austin, and second is Little Dooey in Starkville, this is right behind those.

And yes, the bread was right out of the bag, it's that way at most bbq places you go to in the south.

So head on down and lock the car.

BTW, to put my review in perspective, while I may dine at some 5 star places, I always love the little hole in the walls.  This place is one of those with all the character you would expect .

Open 7 days a week M-Th till 10PM, F-Sat till 12, and Sun till 9 (I couldn't find the times posted anywhere else so thought I'd share)

This is the best bbq joint I have ever been to. Honestly at first I was a bit skeptical. It's just basically a hole in the wall and when you go inside, the kitchen and the cashier are separated by a thick bulletproof glass. Yeah it may seem intimidating at first, but if you're like me, you'll get it to go and eat it anyways.

This place does have its downsides though. If you come in after a lunch rush there's a good chance they may run out of some of the food, but I keep an open mind about it. Popularity has its downsides. I realize you can only stock up on so much and I just head to Carmen and Family BBQ which is right down the street and good, but not AS good haha.

So why 5 stars? That's because this place was never meant to be full of ambience or luxury. A hole in the wall restaurant is meant to look as such and that's where some of the best foods come from too.

P.S. I always get the 2 way combo with the Pork Ribs and the Sliced beef. It's on HIT!

These guys have a reputation as one of the best barbeque spots in the east bay for a reason.  It's tough to beat their food & I've never had anything bad here.

The only reason to give them 4 stars instead of 5 is that I never feel welcomed here.  Sometimes you get the feeling that you're wasting the time of the people who work here when you order some food.

Don't come here if you're looking for a good sit down place as this one is a bit small and the staff isn't the most friendly.  If you're looking for great BBQ, this place will deliver.

Reading through the other reviews I felt I needed to weigh in on this. Barbeque is more than meat, it's more than sauce, it's more than cooking technique. The real secret to world class Barbeque is soul. Anthony Bourdain says that you can taste a cultures history in it's food and I've never felt more connected with my neighborhood and people on this coast than sitting in this spot eating in the small dining room across from the bullet proof glass.  In our world of rapidly homogenizing, corporate approved,  cookie-cutter shopping centres I embrace places like this because they're the last outposts of real local culture and proof that at one point there WERE things other than Coldstone and Chipotle out there.

First off I would like to say R.I.P to Momma Dorthy and Mr Everett.
Without them, we wouldnt have this wonderful tasting Barbeque.
This is just one of the locations out of many others in the Bay Area. Their main location is in Jack London Square Oakland, CA. which is a Dine in restaurant with waiters and a full bar.

This is the Best BBQ in the Bay Area. RECOGNIZE IT.

I used to be a regular here (Hayward location). But Im in Oakland now. Every night for dinner I'd stop by to pick up an order. I usually get the Two Way Combo, Rib and Links (13.65). This combo comes with 6-7 pieces of pork ribs, a hand full of sliced home-made links, a scoop of potato salad and two slices of wheat bread. I personally like my medium sauce on the side, not a fan of drowning the BBQ.
The slabs used to be 20.00 which also came with wheat bread and potato salad. Always perfect for a family dinner.
This is the BEST BBQ SAUCE Ever. They sell the sauces in jars which you can purchase there or any pak n save or safeway. The BBQ was always moist and tender with the smoke ring of course.. The sauce is what makes it the best, but you can always eat it with just the dry rub. Their menu consist of Chicken, Brisket (sliced beef), Links, Pork Ribs. They have different combos/ dinners to choose from. The sides were usually baked beans with links in them and the (yellow) potato salad. If you dont know the difference between regular white potato salad and yellow, you need to get with it. Cause its off the hook.

You can either call in a phone order or just come by. They have a bullet proof glass window just like the check cashing spots out there. And a pick up window where they slide the food under to you. They do have a few tables for eat in. In the summer time, I love to seat and eat in the back patio area which is where the BBQ Pit is located.

I havent been here in awhile but I remember there was a chubby spikey haired chinese kid that use to work here. He use to hook it up quite often. He had it locked down like a school bike,  from cutting the BBQ meat to collecting money as the cashier. Big ups to the guy. Customer Service was always prompt and great.

They have a soda machine which was a dollar soda and some great delicious desserts. I used to get the Sock it to me cake and the sweet potato pie, my my my....They also had Seven up cake and pecan pies. The cakes were sold by slices and the pies were the mini ones. They were delivered from another company as I can recall, not home made. But off the chain.

Parking is also great. You can park in the rear but I think they closed it off now, In the front or on the left side of the joint.

Two Thumbs and 5 Stars!
****Best in the Bay, all Day!!****E&J

This has got to be the first time that I was somewhat intimidated while eating at the restaurant!  Maybe some of it is just imagination... but check this out as I sat down with two of my buddies at one of the tables:

Three African American guys, all bigger than I, came in and ordered their food through the bulletproof glass.  Then, they promptly stood and watched me and two of my buddies as we dug into our bbq ribs.  Luckily a football game was on TV to distract our attention, but we couldn't help notice they were watching us and not the TV!  It's not like the restaurant was super crowded with no seating... My buddy notice this too as we sat quietly and finished our meal.  Nothing happened ofcourse as they left when they got their food several minutes later.

Yes, you have to order in a scenario that reminds you of a check-n-cash place, but all of this does not matter because the wet sauce smothered over the ribs are oh so worth it.  Sides (baked beans and potato salad) are decently done, but corn on the cob is just average.  Service is alright.. counter service basically, but they are prompt with the order and do a decent job to get the food ready.  For $10, you get 7-8 ribs with two sides.  There's a $1.25 bottle soda vending machine inside the restaurant/joint/

The food is great and worth a look if in the area, but I am definitely taking it to go next time.

Food: 5/5
Ambiance: 2/5

Holy COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW this place is good. With a BBQ craving I don't think you can find anywhere better than this BBQ joint, even their counterpart in Oakland doesn't compare.

This place is small -- there are about 4-5 tables there, enough to seat about 20 people. You will be ordering through what seems like a bulletproof glass window, but the people there are nice and their prices are cheap for their quantity and quality of food. I was starving that day and this place did not disappoint. I got a large meal of pork ribs + potato salad + corn on the cob, and it comes with wheat bread. The corn on the cob was not exactly edible or tasty, but the rest were FANTASTIC and I think it was only $12 or $14. My boyfriend ordered the large beef links + baked beans + cole slaw, and that was about $12. The cole slaw was okay but everything was else was great.

If you are looking for some good ol' fashioned hole-in-the-wall BBQ you should definitely take a moment to visit this place, especially if you're already in the area. It won't disappoint!

BBQ in the barrio.
About 2.5 stars

This is one of those places where if you are not of the right ethic background or color, you are mostly ignored.

I 've been to  every E&J in the bay area at least once and this one is without a doubt ,the worst of the bunch.

E&J used to be pretty good, but like most other businesses ,if your employees suck ,the business suffers.

I tried to get waited on for about 5 or 10 minutes with nobody else in the place and was pretty much ignored by the two people behind the bullet proof glass.

What;s the point of eating there,if you can't get service.

Go up the road to West A Street to Carmines.

Better ,faster, and cleaner with no attitudes.

Two Words: Boo Yaa!   This is truly legit BBQ.   The beef and link combo is one of my favorite meals anywhere.   They make the links themselves and the beef brisket is very smokey and usually tender.  The sauce is the best part, smokey, sweet, spicy, tangy all in one.  The sides aren't that good.

Seriously, the other dude who gave this a bad review really doesn't know bbq. He must be a vegetarian. Anyways, this is a hole in the wall bbq joint located out in Hayward, plexi-glass and wrought iron screen doors and all. For the most part the place is safe. I would suggest that you call ahead to see the availability of ribs, chicken, links, sliced beef etc.

So about the food, its legit. The sauce is spot on delicious, varying in hotness, i found the Super Q at medium to be perfect. Granted the 3 times i've been here I've only gotten ribs, those ribs are pretty good. they fall off the bone fairly easy and thats a true testament to its taste.

There aren't that many places to cop good ass bbq in the bay area so do yourself a favor and take a trip to Everett & Jones.

p.s.
Does anyone care if the service is bad? Im more concerned with the product.

The food is great and tasty. My favorite would be the large order of ribs. If your not really in to spicy make sure you don't get hot bbq sauce.

The place looks like a dump, if you never tried the food before or ever heard of Everett & Jones. I think you would be afraid to come into the store. The service is terrible, expect to wait at least 20mins + for your order. Phones orders are taken, however it based on who answers the phone and is willing to take your order over the phone. Sometimes, they do, and other times they say, "we are not taking phone orders right now"

Overall I say, the food is good, but the place and service is crap

Excellent place to get some BBQ in the Hayward area.  Reasonably priced BBQ and one large entree is more than enough for one person.  I had the sliced beef and the pork ribs with medium Super Q sauce and it was delicious!!!  I prefer the pork ribs as the meat just rolled off the bones.  Next time I think I'll have the chicken or the links just to change it up.  Along with the entrees, I had the potato salad, corn, and baked beans.  Unfortunately they didn't have cole slaw but maybe it's cuz I went on opening on a Monday morning.

As far as the service, it was just fine (15 minute wait) with the exception that I didn't get my wheat bread with the entree but it wasn't that big of a deal.   Great hole in the wall kind of place in Hayward and a fantastic local place to get some awesome BBQ.

Final note: don't be spooked out by the plexiglass (i wonder if it's bulletproof) in between the customer and the cashier or the cubbyhole that they give you the food through (reminiscent of prison)....it adds to the ambiance of the place.  =)

The bbq was good, but nothing to write home about. Too much fat to meat ratio for my tastes. Their bbq sauce is pretty tasty though. Prices are decent because their overhead must be very small. It's in a very shady area so bring someone with you to avoid getting violated; preferably someone large and heavily armed (jk, slightly).

I was on a vacation from San Antonio to the Bay Area and visited E&J on the recommendation of the people on Yelp.

All I can say is: ya'all should only be able to review Dim Sum and Indian food. They are the best here, but you know NOTHING about BBQ.

The sliced beef was tough and the mild BBQ sauce had a bitter aftertaste. The ribs were marginal - three of the six were also tough. I've had better potato salad from a supermarket to go counter. The bread was right out of the 99ยข Store.

Come to Texas and visit Rudy's or Salt Lick. Or go to Memphis and have Rendezvous or Corky's. Even Mo's Smokehouse in San Luis Obispo is 200 times better.

Jack London Square location is the best.  This one is second best in the franchise.  Take-out.  Small space with lots of their family's nostalgia.  Great Sauce.  I enjoy the ribs and the links with the hot BBQ sauce.  Sides orders are just okay.  Pricey ($10-$15) but worth it.

this was always our place to go if we were craving bbq.

+ beef strips
+ hot links

i brought some leftovers to work and everyone there knew the what i had once i opened the container; they were able to place the smell to the food.

Service is a hit or miss, be prepared for a very long wait if trying to order food on a holiday..

TIP: their credit card swiper isn't always working; you should carry some cash just in case.

Destination Location for bay area BBQ. Rude service, bullet-proof glass, long waits on the weekends, and loud R&B music bumpin from a boom box are just some of the things to expect at E&J's. The fact there beans, potato salad, sauce, pecan pie, and beef links are all home made speaks better than 90% of BBQ in the bay. The Beef brisket (not grilled tri-tip) is tender, smoked over white oak for 15 hours. Dont believe me check out the 12 foot Texas-style solid stone smoker out on the back patio. In my opinion thats what makes them the best BBQ. pure authenticity.

The mother/founder of this restaurant has recently passed away, Oct 8 2007. God rest her soul. RIP

The bbq is very good.  The flavor is very good. I love the ribs and sausage.  The pies are good when they have them.  I dont mind standing in liine because its so yummy. I however find myself at the staffs mercy to get the good bbq. The staff can be rude and not smile or speak except asking you for the money. Its a hole in the wall in a questionable area but its well worth the associated risks.

the sliced beef and sausage with the hot bbq sauce is the best...they have 3 stores one in jack london, which i didn't like much, it was a nicer rest. but pricier and for some reason didnt' taste as good..the fruitvale one is pretty good, but i find the hayward location to be the best....if you haven't tried the hot bbq sauce it is a booty burner...
