Being a new mother had left me feeling just like that suave commercial. Diapers had taken the place of my beloved salon visits and my hair was in it's worse shape in many years. It was my birthday and I decided I was going to pull myself out of my rut with a new do. I had been reading many good things about Magic Salon on Yelp and gave them a call, much to my delight they were able to get me an appointment an hour later! My stylist was Sonya and I can't say enough good things about the cut she gave me. I have really thick hair that can be hard to cut and she really took the time necessary to do my hair right. I had serious anxiety over trying a new salon and now I know there was no need. I can't stop looking in the mirror and my husband still hasn't wiped the smile off his face. I adore the new me-Thanks Sonya! -I will def be coming back.

The People here are SO nice and the cut and color were superb!!
The price was more than I expected. Worth the price, but I was still a little shocked.
I do HIGHLY recommend, but you might want to find out how much it's going to cost first.

Been looking for a good place to get a haircut and not waste my money. Especially times being what they are, so... saw all the good reviews on yelp and decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did.
Got my cut by the lovely Sonya. She did an excellent job!!! She took her time, asked me what I wanted, told me what she was doing and why, explained things, looked at the cut and how it looked on me (facial structure and whatnot) and just did a really super dooooper job.
The conversation was good and the whole atmosphere was pretty chill. I dug it. lol. Anyways, I really liked how the staff were very friendly and really seemed to get along with the customers and enjoy cutting their hair. Y'know how some stylists seem kinda bitter or angry? Yeah, none of that here. The shop was clean, the decor was quirky and different than the usual, but that was also good.
The staff engaged their customers but in no way did they neglect their job, they concentrated and took great care in doing their work. I guess that show's how good they are right? They can talk and do fabulous hair at the same time. Not only was my stylist good, but looking around and observing the others and the results of my friend who also got a hair cut, they are all definitely good.
It was kinda pricy for me, $35; usually I won't spend more than $20, and even that was stretching it. But, all in all, I think it was worth it and I know for sure I'm definitely going to go back. They made a good impression and I'm happy I went. I full-heartedly encourage you to check them out if you want a good hair cut and experience.

First and foremost, hello Mason, Magic and Magic Salon! :)
Ok, onto the nitty gritty: the review. [dundundun!]
Fellow yelp-ers, have you been traumatized by past salon experiences? Do you break into a cold sweat at just the mere thought of someone getting close to your hair with a pair of shears? Yes? Well then we're in the same boat. After a HORRENDOUS salon experience senior year in hs (somehow layers and a trim turned into a full-blown mullet?), the idea of getting a haircut has been as enjoyable as a visit to the dentist. But Magic Salon changed all of that. :)
From my visit, I've learned a couple of things.
1.) The salon is really welcoming and genuine. They don't shoo you out after you've taken care of the bill. Magic and I ended up having a discussion on everything from driving long distances to CA's cosmetology exam.
2.) Mason takes the time to really listen to his client. Concerns, vision, what you ate for breakfast, etc etc. ;)
3.) He doesn't try to push you in a direction you're not comfortable with. He takes what you've discussed and really works with you on what you'd like.
4.) The price for a cut was reasonable. ($35 + tip) Not bad right!
5.) You will end up with something lovely. Trust me.
6.) I've seen the work product from other people who are at Magic Salon and it's great. Whether you go to Mason or not, you'll be in good hands.
Good luck with your search for a salon and hopefully you'll give Magic Salon a try.
Ok here it goes.....I was a little frustrated after my first visit and I wrote a pretty nasty review on yelp since that is how I found the salon. I was asked to come back to have my hair fixed after they read my initial review. I decided to give it another shot (I almost didn't want to mainly for embarrassment of the nasty review....which I did delete).
I must say I got what I wanted!! I am very happy with my hair. I am sooooo glad I decided to give it another try with Magic Salon (Michelle you rock, thanks sweetie!!).
The first time I called, they got me in that same day, pretty much said come on straight over. The second time I got in the next day, which was the day I needed. I love that because I am impatient. If I decide I want to change my hair I want to do it right then and there and if I am told I have to wait a week then I kinda lose interest.
Everyone there seems super nice and REAL!! I love the atmosphere.
So overall I like this place and I would recommend Michelle (I am sure others there are great too, but I haven't had the pleasure).
So yeah, 5 stars! Top Notch! Thanks again Michelle!!

I found Magic Salon on Yelp, when I was desperate for a haircut and needed a change from the stylist I'd been seeing for quite some time. I was eight months pregnant and HAD to have a change. Magic was able to get me on the schedule really quickly, and Mason gave me a haircut that I LOVE. It has been so easy to take care of -- and looked good through my last month of pregnancy, labor and birth! Now that I'm starting to get back to everyday life I will go back and see what Mason can do next for me. This haircut has made me feel sexy and pulled together despite all the post partum hormones!
The salon was hip and urban, tucked away in a little building off of Franklin Blvd. and Freeport/12th Avenue. There's a lot of original art and decor, and the funky, comfortable vibe was welcoming and relaxing. Not as relaxing as Mason's head massage, though! If I won the lottery, I'd book Mason to wash my hair every day.
Something I really like about the salon is that Magic and Mason are open on Sundays -- really rare for a salon of this quality.
In short, I'm a loyal Magic Salon client now, and can't wait to go back for my next cut.

i've been growing my hair out for three years. Mason kept the split ends at bay and encouraged me to let it grow. My sister's wedding is next weekend and I thought i could use a little, well, style. my hair was long ...and boring. I made an appointment and told him what I wanted. Nothing too specific but a general idea. I absolutely LOVE my new hairstyle!! Mason has a gift. He listens to you and does exactly what you need to have done with your hair. I never doubt that I will get a fabulous cut when I go to Magic Salon. He also does a totally bitchin job on my son's hair. He doesn't talk down to him or treat him like a dumb little kid. That's awesome.
The price is totally reasonable and worth every single penny!

Hands down the best experience at a salon I have ever had. I have had my hair cut by Maison 3 times now and my square conservative Mom is now going to him...that tells you something being that I am tatted up and pierced here and there. He is real, honest and awesome. His partner Magic is fantastic. The staff is great, it is the best. Go.

Alright I freaking heart Magic and Mason and this is why: Mason gives a rockin hair cut and a great head massage...I seriously almost had to smoke a ciggy afterwords.,..and I don't smoke! and Magic gives you a courtesy call the day before your appt. and makes you feel hella welcome when you walk in the door and not the press on nails fake welcome...you know what I mean. they offer you coffee and other bevvies, I walked in not really sure what I even wanted done to my hair...I knew I needed the blonde fried bits gone and that I wanted some hair in my face to cover the ol' wrinkles and somehow he figured it out! (he is very patienti ) so I'm in the chair ..(Mason & Magic have been together for like 18 years) she goes to leave & he stops what he was doing ( just for a second) to open the door for her! Dude Stuff like that seriously melts me.

Magic Salon really is magic! Sonya did an excellent job of cutting my hair. I have never had a hairstylist pay such careful attention to what I wanted or to the quality of their work as Sonya. The salon was clean and pleasant and the people were genuine and very friendly. (Even the other clients were friendly. I haven't experienced that in a while.) I love the cut that Sonya gave me. It's been two weeks since I got it cut and the style is still easy to do and looks great. In one short hour, I went from frumpy to stylish in the hands of this talented artist. Thank you Yelp for helping me find Magic Salon and thank you Sonya for a fabulous hairdo.

I just returned from Magic and I love it. My hair looks awesome and (I'm so going to butcher my loverly stylists name..and I asked her twice. Sorry) Sierna was FAN-FRIEEKN-TASTIC!! I have finally found a place that will give my head the attention it deserves!

Five stars isn't enough. This place deserves ten stars! Eleven stars! A million stars! I have had the same haircut for about ten years. I was thinking of going a little bit shorter, but I have no vision for these things. So, I totally lucked out meeting Justine (I hope I spelled your name right!) In no time at all I got an adorable, spunky, sexy cut. I love it beyond words! I have never been so excited about a haircut before. Thank you, Justine! Thank you, Magic Salon! That was me breathing a sign of relief for FINALLY FINDING A NEW SALON.
My wonderful stylist relocated to So Cal a couple of years ago and I've been salon bouncing for all that time, getting mostly bad cuts, and worrying that there was only one person on this planet capable of cutting my hair. I can't tell you how many times I've walked out of salons feeling downright ugly in the past couple of years.
When I went to see Mason, though, I finally walked out feeling sassy and cute again.
The ambiance is so great...if you are a laid back, down to earth kinda person, you will like it here. There is art and the decore is hella rad, without making you feel like you aren't good enough to be there. It's just not pretentious at all, in any way, which is totally NOT how most salons are in the area now.
Here is the one thing that you probably can't garner from the reviews so far.. Mason isn't some GQ'd out gay guy who does fabulous hair. He may or may not offer you a Coors (so he says). He actually is a total old skool punk lookin dude, with bleached hair of his own(which, I think, had a hint of green when I saw him), who just happens to be really good at cutting hair. We had a great conversation about music. He's not what I expected but is freaking awesome at his job.
When I got home from my hair cut, my husband said I looked hot. That's the ultimate test of a haircut for me. If my husband notices enough to compliment it, it must be good.
I'm so happy I found a new salon. :)

Just as described... The people were awesome, (I would totally hang out with them!) the place was friendly and inviting (Full of laughter and fun!) and the cut was perfect for me. I will be back! (Oh, and Magic's iced coffee was the bomb!)

I was tempted to hold back a review of Magic Salon for fear of having Mason innundated with customers, but I feel like for the good of the community I have to concur with every other 5 star rating. Mason is wonderful and he has given me newfound trust in stylists other than the one I had been going to for the past 10+ years.
The salon is much more hipster, punk-rock than you'd think. It's a little hard to find, but it's on the intersection of 12th and Franklin. While Mason owns the place, he rents space to all the other stylists - so don't assume that you can just pick any person to cut your hair. Hair color seems to be their forte here, but I loved my hair cut and it was super affordable.
Also, they have free espresso drinks - what more could you ask for?? Thank you Mason for an awesome haircut!!

Mason is the man. In five minutes, he took my suggestions, showed me a few pics in a magazine, and then presto - he was on his way to giving me a quality cut.
I'm not sure what exactly it was, but I was never as nervous as I usually am when I go to a brand new place to get a haircut. He is very chill and better yet, pretty damn talented. None of the chainsaw-massacre-like approaches with clippers here...instead, he worked like Edward Scissorhands for a solid twenty minutes to give me the cut I wanted. All in all, I ended up with a cut that looked better and better with each passing day and I never regretted going here.
It's just too bad that I can't talk myself into putting this much change into every cut, mainly b/c my hair grows faster than weeds and I need to get it cut literally every 2.5-3 weeks. That being said, if I win the lottery, or finish my training (whichever comes first), I'll be sure to dedicate my winnings to the Magic Salon, a very worthy cause indeed.

I went to Magic for the first time a couple weeks ago and LOVED the haircut that I got. I had my hair done by Sonya, who's recently moved there from a different salon. She was easily one of the best stylists I've ever had. I came in knowing exactly what I wanted (I even brought a picture) and she took the time to look it over and cut my hair as closely to the picture as possible. She even styled it in the same way and it looked amazing! As she was doing my hair she also gave me tips on taking care of and styling my hair which were very useful. I was very impressed and highly recommend you make an appointment with her!

Michelle is amazing with curly hair. I have never had my hair cut by somebody who really knows how to work with wild waves. She gave my hair great body without the triangle effect and I really love the gloss she gave me too!
I'll definitely be going back!
Well I finally got this yelp thing all together, so it's about time I write my long over due review of Magic Salon. I have horrible almost unmanigable wanna be curly frizzy hair, thats always a pain in the @$$!!! I've been to salon after salon and I never leave happy. Until I found Magic Salon that is. Mason is absolutely AMAZING, and Magic is a sweet and aweome receptionist!!! It's got great decor, music and the best atmosphere. It's totally affordable and they run even better monthly specials!!!!! I'll never go to another salon!!! I always leave with my hair feeling soft and looking GREAT!!! I can't wait to go back, everyone with hair should check this place out!!!!!

I absolutely LOOOOOOOVEEEE this hair salon. I'm used to getting my hair cut in San Francisco. (It seems as if the salonist their was the only guy that knew how to cut my thick unruly hair) Since gas is getting so crazy i decided to try to find a salon that would be able to hold me over until i go to SF again. Well now i prefer this place over the salon in SF. The service is great and MASON is excellent at cutting my hair! Everyone there is so nice! I haven't heard any negative comments about this salon. I originally heard about this salon from a friend who told me and now i'm telling everyone about this wonderful salon!!!!
I did my hair about 2 months ago...I found this salon since I'm a yelper! I gave Mason a try since it has 5 stars reviews. I believe I went there on a Saturday in the afternoon.. but I was the only customer there the whole entire time..funny. I like what he did with my hair cut because he takes the time and he listen and not over do it. I told him to cut alittle here and there and before you know it.. it was better then what I've expected. I even had my bang done.. can u imagine I haven't had bangs since I was a little girl. I'm going back again for another look and I know I have my confidence in my stylist. I recommend anyone to give it a try.

I have a big interview this week. Rather than go cheap like I usually do, I felt the need to go all out for a really good haircut. Seeing all the rave reviews Magic Salon was getting, I decided to try them out.
I dropped in on Sunday and Amber cut my hair. This is easily the best haircut I have ever received. Previous stylists have told me I have difficult hair to cut, but Amber did an incredible job with it. I'm trying to grow it out and it was getting unruly. Amber listened to what I wanted to do with it and gave me a cut that I'm very satisfied with.
If I pull off this interview, I definitely will place Amber and Magic Salon on the list of people to thank.

I was a little apprehensive about trying Magic Salon, despite the great reviews, because it did seem to cater to the punk-rock set based on the pictures posted here and on myspace, and that's not exactly my look. But I went ahead and scheduled an appt with Amber, and I'm SOO glad I did. I went in with just a description of what I wanted, no picture, and came out with the haircut (and highlights) I've been trying to get for years. Just in case it was a fluke, I waited until after my second visit to review, but it wasn't -- the next haircut was just as good. Nay, great. Nay, supremely awesome. I have never been happier with my head!
Before Magic I was going to another highly rated salon in town, and I was pretty happy, but now I am ecstatic. Better style for much less money -- who can argue with that?

I found Magic Salon via Yelp, and I'm glad I did! Justine was what my shapeless, lifeless, hair needed! I've got the 'dramatic' hair cut I've been after, and in six weeks when I go back for a trim, I'll be adding some gorgeous (and inexpensive!) extensions to bulk up my hair and add a little bit of color!

hello everyone, do not be fooled! this magic place is a total fake! i was there this weekend and the girl who cut my hair did not know what she was doing! so slow as if i was her very first customer, but thats not my concern, as i walked in guess who was on yelp typing in there own remarks,the receptionist!!! do not believe the hype all these 5 star comments all all most likely from the people who work there!!!!!!!!

I got my hair done at Magic Salon by Mason a week ago and I just now got time to write a review (though not that much time, so I must be brief).
I went in with long, black, somewhat damaged hair and emerged several hours later with short, light red, somewhat less damaged hair. The cut is beautiful, the color is wonderful, and all of my hair is still in my head, not fried off.
Mason is a true artist, and fun to hang out with. Magic is charming and funny and makes the time pass quickly.
I'm a cheap fucker and my new hair was worth every penny!

i got my hair cut here a few weeks ago-and it still looks good. Mason did a great job-and, unlike other salons I have been to, I was not burdened with pointless chatter about American Idol. They were very helpful when I had to reschedule and just very nice. Mason is very talented, and gave me something that looks way more stylish and fun than the awful hack job I had before.
It's a bit out of the way for me(and easy to miss if you've never been) but I will definitely go again.

I got a cut and color touch-up from Mason a few weeks ago. He did a great job with my curly hair. I'm quite impressed by the time and thought he put into the cut. My hair now has a great shape.
I enjoyed the atmosphere in the salon. Mellow and friendly. The vibe is warm and I think everyone, from Harley bikers to corporate types, would feel comfortable.

You knock down someone's rating, someone who has worked his ass off to learn his trade and start his own business, over something so arbitrary? Ridiculous!
I've had Mason cut my hair for years now. He's cut my hair in his basement, at a salon in Oak Park, at Alley Cuts and now at Magic Salon. Mason can do any style. He worked hard to learn how to cut EVERY type of hair. He can give great advice and help you figure out what you want to do with your hair. And he'll cut it how you want it, even if you go in and ask for a foo-foo haircut on your head, as I've done many times. This guy is the real deal. Service, style, artistry and he is a great guy as well.
The salon is the coolest. Hang out with Magic, have an espresso, read MAD magazine and you'll end up wanting to hang out even after the cuttin' is done.
Maybe they'll build a proper website soon. I could really care less.

Finding a place for mens haircut is hard these days especially difficult heads like mines. Usually I go to the cheap haircut down the street. So I decided to walk-in at magic based on reviews. The place was very charming and laid-back. Mason was busy so I had Ericka cut my hair. You know what, she gave me a nice cut. I say nice because I have difficult midlength hair. She took her time and made all the right cuts to achieve my style. Put it this way, no more supercuts for me. Price well with 20 for easy and 35 for difficult midlength hair like mines.

I was 7 minutes late to my appt. I felt so stupid for driving by this place three times before I found it. But I was SO glad I did! I've been hearing such rave reviews from beautified friends that have gone in and gotten transformed here. I'm scissor-phobic, being the product of a hairstylist mother myself, I'm always a little nervous when I go to sit down to get my hair did....
...BUT I want to thank Erika for taking real good care of me! I even brought her a picture (yeah, I'm one of THOSE people) and she gave me suggestions, had really fun techniques to give my hair edge, used innovative cutting techniques and was overall, a perfect hairapist! I tell ya, couldn't help feeling a little bit cooler walking out of there, and the winning combination, when I got home, my teenage son said "Cool haircut Mom!" Score!
While I was there, I also overheard Mason consulting a woman, who shared a horrifying story, that I'm sure we've all experienced before, where a stylist kind of goes Zamboni on your hair when you're trying to grow it out, and telling her how she should wear her hair instead of listening to what she wanted. Mason consoled her, listened intently, and advised, and that woman, also walked away a very happy customer! She looked great too!
And when Magic told me how much the haircut/shampoo/set was...I was like WHAT? That's so cheap....I know I'll be back!

Magic Salon is wonderful! As a Seattle transplant, I tried it based on the Yelp reviews, and was not disappointed. Justine is a fantastic stylist, personable and talented. She listens carefully to what you want and then goes for it, making great suggestions and telling you what she's up to and how to keep up the style at home. I totally trust her skills and I've ended up with a great cut both times! She won't talk your ear off with phony banter like some stylists, just makes you feel comfortable and welcomes you like a friend. She remembered what we had talked about at my last hair cut and my exact cut and "hair goals" (including growing out my hair, so she went easy on the amount she cut off while still giving me a great new 'do). Plus, she spent extra time at the end giving me cute little curls with a mini flat-iron, definitely going the extra mile, and the best part being that she obviously enjoys her job. Everyone in the salon contributes to the great, comfortable, friendly atmosphere. I am sad to be leaving Sacramento and these wonderful people, I've never been this happy with a salon anywhere else!
P.S.--Justine rocks at giving people good bangs! Love mine :)

I have been getting my hair cut by Mason for almost 5 years.
I'm was elated when he and Magic finally got a Salon. This Salon is the most laid back, and dare I say cool, that I have ever been to.
Mason is unique amongst stylists in that he just makes you look good, and that's it.....No matter how you want your hair done, even if you have a picture of exactly how you want to look, Mason makes you look better! I swear! And not in that "let it grow out a coupla days" bullshit either! You leave the place looking 115% better than when you entered.
Magic is sweet as hell, and always has a crack about something to make me giggle.....Sometimes I just go by to hang out, even if I don't have an appointment.........did I mention they even have espresso while you wait? Oh, and MAD magazine! Show me one other Salon in town that has MAD magazine....I mean damn!
This place is truly one of a kind, and it lives up to it's name.

sonya is wonderful! i am the most ridiculously indecisive client ever...and sonya is alwaaaays patient with me. i've been going to her for over a year now after she did an emergency haircut for me after a stylist at spanish fly did the opposite of what i asked for. :o(
if i had lots and lots of discretionary income i would see her daily just for the scalp/neck massage she gives during the shampooing!
