This place is so great. The debris Po-boy, the maque choux, everything here is soooo tasty and authentic. This is the real deal, and that fact that it's insidee an old-man dive bar makes it feel even more authentic. Good job Yats!

Holydamn.

I aint had a Po'Boy that good since I left home...

Go to this  cute little dive with the adorable pink haired lady taking orders and get some EAST COAST seafood sandwiches!!

They fly the bread and the seafood in from the gulf. Hells yeah. My new favorite lunch place. Fo sho. This means the shrimp is succulent and buttery, not seafoody and gross like west coast shrimp, and the bread is not slightly sourdough, but made with things like butter and sassy attitude.

I can't speak for the oysters personally, as this Virgo does not eat the boogers of the sea, but my Nawlins born housemate (who turned me on to this little gem a few blocks away) swears by them.

Im sold.

From this Southerner to the rest o' yall. Eat at Yats' and eat it well.

Not many people know this but I have a big thing for New Orleans. When I road-tripped out to San Francisco from NYC some years back, my friends and I had to go in a big U to get across the country, just because I insisted we spend some time in the Big Easy (I also made us stop at Graceland, but that's another story).

I also spent a good year listening to Robbie Robertson's Storyville album, and still put it on when the mood suits (man, if only these walls could talk). Again, another day, another tale.

So I was a bit sad to find out about Yats' just the other night, only because it had taken me this long. Yats' is located within Jack's Club (see my review) and they sort of co-operate together. You order at the counter -- paying separately -- and then can hang at Jack's bar or one of the tables while you wait for your heap o' food.

While the joint is semi-famous (so I hear) for Po-Boys, I went with a big bowl of their Rustic Gumbo. Mmmhmmmmm: 6 jumbo shrimp, mixed with chicken, smoked sausage and veggies in a dark roux, and served over rice.

Next time I'm in, and yes I'll be there soon, the Sausage and Chicken Jambalaya has my name on it. Then again, so does the Fried Catfish Plate...

Well, that's about all I have to say on this. As they say down South, 'Nuff said.

The ONLY bad thing about this place is the hours!

They keep switching them around so much I don't know when to go in there anymore!

I also just wish they were open on Sundays while I'm watching the football games all day long!!!

Other than that...
The debris Po-Boy  is like crack! That's excellent by the way.
The Jumbalaya is good but could be spicier.
Red Beans and Rice a hit or miss, kind of bland most of the time!
Mac and Cheese EXCELLENT!
Buffalo Wings Off the Hook!!!

Red Velvet cake dry but the German Chocolate is to die for!!!

All in all though Love the location, thankful it's there and definitely worth checking out!!!

They don't take credit cards but there's an ATM machine right next to the window where you place your order. Don't let the pink haired not so well groomed detour you though she's nice enough!

And I heard they do cater as well!!!

Went here for lunch today and I must say this place hits the spot for some southern comfort food.  My boyfriend and I had the shrimp po'boy, buffalo wings, fries and cornbread.  All really good picks and I was not disappointed at all and I will definitely will be coming back to try the plate dishes which all looked very tempting. Although I hope one day they will be able to extend their hours past 4pm on the days they are open (M-Sat).

Don't forget...this place only takes ca$h so stop by the ATM before heading over here. YUM!

Ok, here's the problem: you buy a whole, thinking you'll just have a quarter and save the rest for later. You make it through a half and think, "just wrap it up and save it for tomorrow." Then, "just a little nibble." Then, "holydamn." You've eaten a whole.
This level of lack of will-power is familiar at 2:30am when some small part of you says, "just go home instead of to the EndUp." But it's wholly uncanny at 2pm on a Tuesday.
This place still serves up the epitome of the pleasure of the abstract sublime, on real french bread with butter and lemon.

Delicious! Just right for a yummy Saturday afternoon snack. And I can imagine it tastes super good after a few drinks at the bar (the restaurant is located INSIDE Jack's Club).

The french fry sandwich was amazing (thanks to the previous reviewer for giving me the confidence to try it). But what made the sandwich was the roast beef gravy on top of it. So basically any of the beef dishes should be good. The husband had the shrimp sandwhich and said the shrimp were some of the best he's had in a long time. Definitely give this spot a try. Where else in SF can you get an amazing sandwich for $4?

This place is the real deal.  Not only is the food 100% authentic but the prices are too.  Everything on the menu sounds great and after my experience here, I'm sure that it is.
I had the french fry sandwich which was awesome!  French fries, roast beef & gravy on some of the most perfect bread I've ever had...add a little hot sauce...what more could you ask for?  My fiancee had the jambalaya which was equally delicious!  We decided to really go all out and try out the bread pudding despite being completely stuffed and let me tell you...the warm bowl of yumminess (topped with bourbon anglaise) melts in your mouth!
I live in the avenues and made the trek to check this place out and it was the first of many more to come.

so i checked this place out last night.....so good. the only real po boy I have had outside of new orleans.....ever. we tried the shrimp, they used corn meal just like at home, the roast beef (like the debris at mothers in nola)....yummmo, and the gumbo also great. the only thing i would suggest is using shredded iceberg lettuce instead of leaf romaine and this is not a complaint at all....it is just the one thing standing in the way of it being 100% like the real thing. very impressed. enjoyed an abita draft while we waited. i will be back, very soon!

i've been looking for a place in SF that reminds me of my eating experiences in New Orleans...and i think i've found it.  my favorite place in Nola is Verti Marte - a little corner store in the French Qtr that has your basics, your Zap's, your Abita, toothpaste AND a food counter in the back full of everything you need to keep you stuffed in between jazz shows and cat naps.

yat's kinda reminded me of Verti Marte.  it's actually inside a bar, in the back corner of a Jack's, just go up to it's yee-haw door (split so the top half can open independently of the bottom) and place your order, and they'll bring it out to you when it's ready.  in the meantime, you can sip on an Abita (one of the few places you can get one in SF) at the bar...

i ordered an oyster po'boy, dressed, with a side of jamabalaya.  what's great is you can order 1/2 or whole orders of everything, including the sandwhiches.  the oysters were fried to perfection - the cornmeal batter sweet and crunchy, the oysters moist and tender, and the bread light and airy so as not to overpower and weigh down the yummy goodness inside.  other po'boys we've had in the city have been on really heavy bread, but this was new orleans style - we asked the owner where he gets his stuff, and he in fact orders the bread from a small bakery in new orleans, he makes the sausage himself, and gets the meats from a local place on 24th street.  his biz partner is from new orleans, so he knows what real Nola food should taste like.

the jambalaya was a little sticky, but i liked it that way, and it had a nice sweetness to it.  yogi my chihuahua gave it 4 paws up.  dave. p's gumbo was awesome, in a dark roux, spicy but not too spicy.  and of course, they have Crystal hot sauce.  and the prices are affordable...and the weather on Monday was hot and balmy, just like nola in the early summer, so i really felt like i was transported halfway across the continent.

the owner said they're hoping to expand into a larger space in the same area of town, as well as open up another location in the east bay.  they bar has jazz sundays, karaoke wednesdays, a pool table in the back, and yummy Yat's in the front.  i say that there's a recipe for success!

oh this place makes me so happy. po boys 3 blocks from my house? that's some hot shit. 2 trips so far - first trip i had a half shrimp dressed (dressed = lettuce, tomato, mayo, and pickles) with a side of fresh cut fries. the shrimp is fried in a cornmeal batter so it's nice and crispy and begs for some crystal. we wanted to get the fries with some of the roast beef gravy but they were out. my pal had a half sausage - they deep fry the sausage!

next trip was roast beef po boy, which was more like a debris than actual roast beef. that's when they take all the juicy bits of beef and put them on your sammich instead of actual slices. i think they braise a chunk of meat and use that - it's more like a pulled meat sandwich that's all saucy. this time we got the fries with the gravy. wow. highly recommended. we also tried the red beans and rice - there was a little  too much rice in the equation for my tastes, but i'm frankly not a big fan of rice. all washed down with an abita amber (on tap). it's heaven, y'all!

I drove way out of my way after reading the reviews of this place on Yelp.  Having lived in the French Quarter for a few years I am always excited about the possibilities of a new Cajun/Creole/Po'Boy joint.  This place is NOT it.  It couldn't have been more disappointing.  I wanted to like it soooooo bad - it's so cool that it is in a bar - cool people working there.  Po'Boy was just OK and Jambalaya wasn't even in the ball park.

Suzanne A. took me here for lunch, and I went again last night for dinner.

They do a very good job of making NOLA favorites such as po' boys and gumbo.  (I was told that they actually import Leidenheimer bread for their po' boys, because they couldn't find the right kind of bread in SF: a pretty strong commitment to authenticity!)

The gumbo is phenomenal, the po' boys are pretty bad-ass (best I've had in the Bay Area since Gravy's left town), and the corn maquechoux is awesome (Uncle Frank's in Mtn View is the only other place I've seen maquechoux in the Bay Area).  I had some of Sue's jambalaya and give that a thumbs-up as well.

The red beans and rice w/ sausage was good (I prefer a more gravy-like consistency, myself), but I was disappointed by the mac and cheese.

I will definitely be back often.  Yats is a great place for me to get a NOLA-food fix.

seriously...
this place is as tom waits as it gets. set off the main drag in the vast ghetto-meets-insanely-rich part of potrero hill, jacks bar (with its ever so humble hand done sign) sits on a corner. now with a new sign next to it advertising "yat's po boys" (or somethin' of the likey). when i walked in the bar, my eyes immediately zoomed in on a hot pink haired rocker lady sitting in a doorway/window in the back. that, my friends, is yat's. a doorway/window in the back of jack's bar. and hopefully you'll get to order from chelsea, the aforementioned pink haired rocker lady (who actually IS a "real" rocker lady). the damn po' boys ain't bad either!!! i'm goin' back...
